The McDowell varsity football team scored with less than a minute remaining to cap an exciting 38-31 victory over Chardon Friday, Sept. 4, at the Trojans’ home opener.
After the Trojans (1-1), raced out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, the Hilltoppers rallied back to cut McDowell’s lead to 24-22 at the half. Chardon proceeded to take the lead and had a 31-24 advantage in the fourth quarter, but a Cash Hammond touchdown catch tied the game and an Evan Kuhn rushing score with less than a minute remaining put the Trojans back in front for the win.
Kuhn accounted for all five Trojan touchdowns, with four touchdown throws and the game-winning score on the ground. He was 20-for-28 with 358 yards passing.
Hammond hauled in two touchdown catches with three receptions and 97 yards total. James Feronti also had 97 yards receiving with six catches and a score.
Andrew Tarasovitch was in on 10 total tackles and Chase Carrick had seven tackles to his name defensively for McDowell.
The win capped off an exciting day at McDowell that included the McDowell Athletic Complex fundraising kickoff, highlighted by McDowell alum and NFL star James Conner addressing the crowd pregame to celebrate the new turf playing surface for the future stadium being named James Conner Field.
McDowell heads to Garfield Heights Friday, Sept. 11, for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff.
